Mare Reproduction

Track heat cycles, breeding records, pregnancy checks, foaling, and progeny for your mares.

HorseBook's reproduction module helps mare owners manage the full breeding lifecycle — from tracking heat cycles through pregnancy monitoring to foaling. All reproduction records are tied to the mare's profile for a complete breeding history.

Heat Cycles

Track your mare's estrus cycles to identify patterns and optimize breeding timing.

Cycle Fields

  • Start Date — when the cycle began
  • Ultrasound Results — findings from reproductive ultrasound
  • Palpation Notes — results of manual palpation exam
  • Follicle Size — size of the dominant follicle in millimeters (key for timing breeding)
  • Uterine Edema — presence and grade of uterine edema (indicates estrogen levels)
  • Drug Administration — any hormones or medications given (e.g., Regu-Mate, Deslorelin, PGF2alpha)

Recording cycles consistently helps you and your vet predict ovulation and time breeding for the best chance of conception.

Breeding Records

Log each breeding attempt with detailed information about the method and semen used.

Breeding Methods

  • Live Cover — Hand — controlled breeding in hand
  • Live Cover — Pasture — natural pasture breeding
  • AI Fresh — artificial insemination with fresh semen
  • AI Cooled — artificial insemination with cooled shipped semen
  • AI Frozen — artificial insemination with frozen semen
  • Embryo Transfer — embryo transfer procedure
  • ICSI — intracytoplasmic sperm injection

Breeding Fields

  • Date — when the breeding occurred
  • Method — one of the methods listed above
  • Stallion — the sire (link to a stallion in your account or enter manually)
  • Semen Quality Data — motility, concentration, and morphology if available
  • Notes — any additional details about the breeding

Pregnancy Checks

After breeding, track pregnancy confirmation through ultrasound checks.

Pregnancy Check Fields

  • Date — when the check was performed
  • Days Post-Breeding — calculated automatically from the breeding date
  • Result — Positive, Negative, or Inconclusive
  • Heartbeat Detected — whether a fetal heartbeat was observed
  • Twins — whether twin embryos were detected

Warn

Twin pregnancies in horses require immediate veterinary attention. If twins are detected, consult your vet about management options. HorseBook flags twin detections prominently on the mare's profile.

Foaling

When it's time, record the details of the foaling event.

Due Date Calculation

HorseBook calculates expected foaling dates at four milestones from the last breeding date:

  • 320 days — earliest expected date
  • 330 days — early expected date
  • 340 days — average expected date
  • 350 days — late expected date

These dates appear on your calendar as a foaling window. See Pregnancy Tracking for more details.

Foaling Fields

  • Foaling Date — when the foal was born
  • Presentation — normal (anterior), breech, or dystocia
  • Complications — any problems during delivery
  • Timing — duration of labor stages
  • Foal Information — sex, color, and initial observations

After recording a foaling, you can create a new horse record for the foal with the mare and stallion automatically linked as dam and sire.

Progeny

The mare's profile includes a progeny section listing all foals she has produced. Each foal links to their own horse profile if they exist in your account.
