Pregnancy Tracking

Monitor pregnant mares with status banners, due date calculations, foaling windows, and calendar integration.

Once a mare is confirmed pregnant, HorseBook provides dedicated tracking tools to help you monitor her through to foaling. Due dates, foaling windows, and status indicators keep you informed at every stage.

Pregnancy Status Banner

When a mare has a positive pregnancy check on record, her profile displays a prominent status banner showing:

  • Current status — Confirmed Pregnant
  • Days since breeding — calculated from the last breeding date
  • Estimated due dates — the four milestone dates (see below)
  • Days until earliest due date — a countdown to the foaling window

This banner is visible at the top of the mare's profile so anyone viewing her record can see her pregnancy status at a glance.

Due Date Calculation

Equine gestation varies, so HorseBook calculates four milestone dates from the breeding date to define the expected foaling window:

MilestoneDays Post-BreedingMeaning
Earliest320 daysFoaling before this date is premature
Early330 daysFoaling is possible and within normal range
Average340 daysThe most common foaling timeframe
Late350 daysStill within normal range; contact your vet if no signs

These dates are calculated automatically from the breeding record. If the mare was bred multiple times, the calculation uses the last breeding date.

Foaling Window on Calendar

The four due date milestones appear on your calendar as a foaling window event spanning from day 320 to day 350. This gives you a visual range on the calendar showing when to expect the foal.

The foaling window event includes the mare's name and links back to her profile for quick access to her full breeding and pregnancy history.

Monitoring Checklist

As the foaling window approaches, keep an eye on:

  • Udder development — filling and waxing of the teats
  • Relaxation of the vulva and tailhead — softening of ligaments
  • Behavioral changes — restlessness, isolation from herd, frequent lying down
  • Milk calcium levels — if you're testing, calcium levels above 200 ppm suggest foaling within 24-48 hours

Tip

Record pregnancy check results as you go. Each check builds a timeline that your vet can review, and positive heartbeat detections are important milestones to document.

After Foaling

Once the mare foals, record the foaling event from her reproduction section. This:

  • Updates her pregnancy status
  • Records foaling details (presentation, complications, timing)
  • Lets you create a new horse record for the foal with dam and sire automatically linked
  • Closes the foaling window on the calendar
