Medical Records
Track vaccines, deworming, dental, farrier, chiropractic, and specialty treatments for each horse.
HorseBook supports eight types of routine medical records, plus tracking for adverse health events. All medical records are associated with a specific horse and appear on that horse's profile timeline.
Record Types
Vaccines
Track vaccination history including the vaccine name, date administered, provider, and expiration. Common vaccines include West Nile, Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Influenza, Rhinopneumonitis, Rabies, and Strangles.
Deworming
Log deworming treatments with the product name, date, provider, and next due date.
Dental
Record dental floats and exams with the date, provider, findings, and any recommended follow-up.
Farrier
Track farrier visits including the date, service type (trim, shoes, reset), provider, cost, and notes.
Chiropractic
Log chiropractic adjustments with the date, provider, areas treated, and follow-up recommendations.
Saltwater Spa
Record saltwater spa therapy sessions with the date, duration, reason, and notes on the horse's response.
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field)
Track PEMF therapy sessions with the date, duration, treatment area, and provider.
Laser Therapy
Log laser therapy treatments with the date, treatment area, protocol used, and provider.
Common Fields
Every medical record type includes these standard fields:
- Date — when the treatment or service occurred
- Provider — the vet, farrier, or practitioner (links to your Contacts)
- Cost — the amount charged (optional)
- Notes — free text for any additional details
- Expiration — when the treatment expires or the next one is due (where applicable)
Tip
For Coggins tests, the expiration date is calculated automatically based on the test date, since most states require annual testing. You can override this if your state has different requirements.
Adding a Medical Record
- Open the horse's profile
- Go to the Medical section
- Click Add Record
- Select the record type
- Fill in the details and save
Expirations and Reminders
Records with expiration dates (vaccines, Coggins, deworming) automatically generate reminders on your Calendar. As the expiration approaches, the record also appears in the dashboard attention items.
Viewing Medical History
Each horse's profile shows their complete medical timeline in reverse chronological order. You can filter by record type to see, for example, just farrier visits or just vaccines.
