Add Your First Horse

Add a horse to HorseBook by scanning a registration paper or entering details manually.

There are two ways to add a horse to HorseBook: scan a registration paper with the iOS app and let AI fill in the details, or enter the information manually on the web or iOS.

Option 1: Scan a Registration Paper (iOS)

This is the fastest way to add a horse. If you have a registration paper from AQHA, APHA, Jockey Club, or another registry:

  1. Open the iOS app and tap the Scan tab
  2. Point your camera at the registration paper
  3. The app auto-captures and sends it to AI for extraction
  4. AI reads the horse's name, breed, color, date of birth, sire, dam, and other details
  5. Review the extracted data and make any corrections
  6. Tap Confirm to create the horse record

Tip

Registration scanning is the default way to add a new horse on mobile. It saves time and reduces typos by reading directly from the official document.

Option 2: Manual Entry (Web or iOS)

You can also add a horse by entering the details yourself:

  1. On the web, click Add Horse from your horses list. On iOS, tap Add Horse from the Horses tab.
  2. Fill in the required fields and any optional details you have
  3. Save the record

Required Fields

Every horse needs at minimum:

  • Barn Name — the name you call the horse day-to-day (e.g., "Duke")
  • Sex — stallion, mare, gelding, colt, or filly

Optional Fields

You can add as much or as little detail as you like:

  • Registered Name — the official name on file with a breed registry (e.g., "Duke's Golden Legacy")
  • Breed — choose from 40+ breeds including Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Paint, Arabian, Appaloosa, and more
  • Color — bay, sorrel, black, palomino, gray, and other common coat colors
  • Date of Birth — the horse's foaling date
  • Pattern — tobiano, overo, sabino, roan, and other coat patterns
  • Markings — facial and leg markings (star, blaze, socks, etc.)
  • Sire and Dam — the horse's parents, which can be linked to other horses in your account
  • Height — measured in hands
  • Weight — measured in pounds

Tip

Barn name is what you use around the barn — "Buddy," "Red," "The Gray Mare." Registered name is the formal name from the breed registry. Many horses are only known by their barn name, and that's perfectly fine.

You can always come back and add more details later. Records are never locked — edit anything at any time.

Next Step

Now that you have a horse in the system, try scanning your first document to attach records like Coggins tests, vet receipts, or health certificates.
